Orosz médiumok arról számoltak be, hogy Evan Gershkovich, a The Wall Street Journal amerikai riportere egy fogolycsere részeként szabadulhat – számolt be az Index a Daily Mail nyomán.
Az orosz hírügynökség szerint olyan foglyok is részt vehetnek a cserében, akik kapcsolatban álltak Alekszej Navalnijjal, Vlagyimir Putyin politikai ellenfelével, akit februárban holtan találtak egy fogolytáborban. Egyes hírek szerint ez lehet a legnagyobb fogolycsere az Egyesült Államok és Oroszország között a hidegháború vége óta.
A Moscow Times által idézett névtelen forrás szerint az orosz hatóságok nagy erőfeszítéseket tettek annak érdekében, hogy az információt Oroszországon belül a lehető legnagyobb titokban tartsák az utolsó pillanatig.
A csere közeledtére utal az is, hogy a Moscow Times szerint négy, többek között kiberbűnözés, csempészet és pénzmosás vádjával az Egyesült Államokban bebörtönzött orosz eltűnt a szövetségi fogvatartottak adatbázisából az Egyesült Államokban.
Evan Gerskovichot 2023 márciusában vették őrizetbe kémkedés vádjával, júliusban 16 év börtönbüntetésre ítélték. A Fehér Ház többször is azt állította, hogy a Gershkovich elleni vádakat jogtalannak tartja, és „elkötelezett” a szabadon bocsátása mellett.
Augusztus 27-én Fehéroroszország Legfelsőbb Bírósága elfogadta az Igazságügyi Minisztérium kérelmét az Újságírók Szövetségének felszámolását illetően. A hírt a szervezet Telegram-csatornáján közölték.
A szövetség 1995 őszén alakult, több mint 1500 taggal rendelkezik, s egy befolyásos, a nemzetközi szakmai közösség által is elismert szervezet.

A nemzetközi emberi jogi szabályokkal összhangban elkötelezett a média szabadságának és sokszínűségének, valamint a véleménynyilvánítás szabadságához való jog védelme mellett, ideértve az információk szabad áramlását is – hangúlyozta a szolgálat, felszólítva Kínát, hogy tartsa be a nemzeti és nemzetközi jog szerinti kötelezettségeit, és biztosítsa a szólás- és sajtószabadságot, amelyet az ország alkotmánya és az emberi jogok egyetemes nyilatkozata is rögzít.
A BBC brit közszolgálati médium szerdán közölte, hogy egyik kínai tudósítója, az ujgur muszlim kisebbséggel szembeni kínai bánásmódról beszámoló John Sudworth családjával elhagyta Pekinget. A tudósító felesége, Yvonne Murray az RTÉ ír közszolgálati műsorszolgáltató tudósítója Kínában.
