Uganda külügyminisztere nem fogott kezet az Európai Bizottság női elnökével, Ursula von der Leyennel, még azt követően sem, hogy külön felhívták a figyelmét a mellette álló politikusra.
Kínos helyzetbe került Ursula von der Leyen, az Európai Bizottság elnöke, ugyanis a brüsszeli EU–Afrika csúcstalálkozón az ugandai külügyminiszter, Haji Abubakhar Jeje Odongo úgy ment el mellette, hogy nem fogott vele kezet – kizárólag a von der Leyen mellett álló Charles Michelt és Emmanuel Macront üdvözölte ily módon. Az incidensről készült felvételen – amit a V4NA is megosztott – jól látszik, hogy a francia elnök felhívja az ugandai politikus figyelmét Ursula von der Leyen jelenlétére, ám az afrikai külügyminiszter ezt követően is csak meghajlással és biccentéssel nyugtázta az Európai Bizottság elnökének jelenlétét és anélkül sétált el a pódiumról, hogy kezet fogott volna a női politikussal.
Az eset után sok kritika érte Charles Michelt, az Európai Tanács vezetőjét, aki nem reagált a történtekre. Szóvivője úgy nyilatkozott a kínos jelenetről, hogy Charles Michel nem látta, hogy mi történt, mert éppen elfordult Ursula von der Leyentől és Emmanuel Macronnal beszélt, amikor megérkezett Uganda külügyminisztere. Elmondása alapján az is látszik a felvételen, amint Charles Michel Emmanuel Macron felé fordul és a francia elnöktől kérdez rá, hogy mi történt.
Sokakat azonban nem győzött meg Charles Michel tanácsadójának magyarázata, a belga lapok a tavaly áprilisban Ankarában történt, sofagate néven elhíresült botrányhoz hasonlítják a történteket, amikor Recep Tayyip Erdogan török elnök és Charles Michel két egymás mellett elhelyezett karosszékben foglaltak helyet, míg Ursula von der Leyen-nek csak egy távolabb elhelyezett kanapé jutott. Az Európai Bizottság elnökétől később elnézést kért Charles Michel, akit rengeteg kritika ért, amiért udvariatlanul viselkedett és nem kért még egy karosszéket Ursula von der Leyen számára.
