Afganisztán 2012-ben, Barack Obama elnök alatt kapta meg az Egyesült Államok fő NATO-n kívüli szövetségesének (MNNA) státuszát.



Joe Biden idén júliusban jelentette be – majdnem egy évvel azután, hogy a tálibok átvették a hatalmat az országban –, hogy Kabult megfosztja ettől a státusztól.



Az Egyesült Államok fő NATO-n kívüli szövetségeseinek listáján 19 ország szerepel, köztük Ausztrália, Egyiptom, Izrael, Japán, Dél-Korea és Brazília.
