Aliyev és Pasinján májusban, az Európai Unió égisze alatt egyeztett egymással Tbilisziben, és a találkozót követően a két ország külügyminiszterei is asztalhoz ültek júliusban.
A túlnyomórészt örmények lakta Hegyi-Karabah a Szovjetunió összeomlásakor Jereván támogatásával elszakadt Azerbajdzsántól, s ez az 1990-es években 30 000 ember halálát és több százezer menekültet okozó háborúhoz vezetett. A területtel kapcsolatos több évtizedes konfliktus 2020 őszén éleződött ki újra. Azerbajdzsán nagyszabású hadműveletet indított a területébe ékelődő enklávé és a még elfoglalt környező területek visszafoglalására, és hadműveletei döntően sikerrel jártak. A harcokban több mint 6000 ember halt meg.
Oroszország, Azerbajdzsán és Örményország vezetői 2020. november 9-én közös nyilatkozatot írtak alá a Hegyi-Karabah körüli konfliktusövezetben az ellenségeskedések teljes beszüntetéséről.
