Franciaország ellenállása miatt a NATO-tagállamok egyelőre nem tudnak egyezségre jutni arról, hogy a védelmi szervezet megnyissa első távol-keleti hídfőállását.
A jövő heti vilniusi NATO-csúcstalálkozó előtt a vita élesen megmutatja az észak-atlanti védelmi szervezeten belüli repedéseket.
A NATO berkeiben hónapok óta tart az egyezkedés arról, hogy a nyugati katonai szervezet Ázsiában is megjelenjen, Japánban egy összekötő irodát nyisson. A vilniusi csúcson terveztek ezzel kapcsolatban bejelentést tenni, de ez a franciák vétója miatt várhatóan elmarad.
Párizs véleménye szerint ez a lépés olyan geopolitikai váltás lenne a szövetség életében, amelyre eredeti ambíciói és fókusza nem terjed ki – úgy értelmezik a NATO Alapokmányát, hogy az az észak-atlanti térség államainak védelmi szövetsége, így annak hatálya erre a régióra terjed ki. „Elvi okokból ezt nem támogathatjuk. Ami az irodanyitást illeti, maguk a japán hatóságok is jelezték, hogy nem lelkesednek a tervért” – közölte pénteken az Elysée Palota.
A távol-keleti megjelenés ötletét részben az motiválta, hogy az elmúlt években Kína az ázsiai térségben nyílt expanziós lépéseket tett, fenyegeti Tajvan biztonságát, és más régiós államok területi integritását és megsérti járőrhajóival, hadgyakorlatai során kilőtt rakétáival.
A kínai külügyminisztérium szóvivője még júniusban jelezte: a NATO keleti megjelenése beavatkozást jelentene a térség belső ügyeibe, illetve a védelmi szövetségek konfrontációját erőltetné.
Emmanuel Macron évek óta azt az álláspontot képviseli, hogy a Nyugat kapcsolata Kínával nem katonai jellegű, a NATO a saját államainak területi védelmére jött létre, azokat pedig Kína nem fenyegeti.
Jens Stoltenberg NATO-főtitkár azonban idén többször vont párhuzamot az orosz ukrajnai beavatkozása és a Kína Tajvan elleni fenyegetése között. „Ami ma megtörtént Európában, holnap megtörténhet Ázsiában” – fogalmazott, figyelmeztetve arra, hogy a NATO-nak nem szabad még egyszer azt a hibát elkövetnie, mint amit néhány évvel ezelőtt tett Oroszország valós szándékainak megítélését illetően.
