Mohamed Eszlámi – akinek a szavait a Fársz félhivatalos iráni hírügynökség idézte – júniusban azt mondta, a síita állam nem folytat semmilyen titkos nukleáris fejlesztést.
A Reuters hírügynökség emlékeztet, hogy az Eszlámiéhoz hasonló állításokat már Kamal Harazi, Irán legfőbb politikai és vallási vezetője, Ali Hamenei ajatollah tanácsadója is megfogalmazott júliusban. Harazi kijelentései után találgatások merültek föl annak kapcsán, hogy a közel-keleti ország mégis atomfegyver előállítására készülne, jóllehet Teherán többször hangoztatta, hogy nukleáris fejlesztései kizárólag békés célokat szolgálnak.
A síita állam már 60 százalékosra dúsított uránt állít elő, jóllehet a 2015-ös atomalku 3,67 százalékig engedélyezné ezt.
Az atomalku felélesztéséről tavaly, Bécsben kezdődtek tárgyalások. Az Irán és a hat hatalom – az ENSZ Biztonsági Tanácsának öt állandó tagja, Egyesült Államok, Kína, Oroszország, Franciaország és Nagy-Britannia, valamint Németország 2015-ben szerződésben megállapodott, hogy az iráni atomtevékenységek korlátozása fejében fokozatosan feloldják a Teherán ellen elrendelt büntetőintézkedések többségét.
Donald Trump akkori amerikai elnök 2018-ban egyoldalúan kiléptette országát a szerződésből, és újból bevezette az iráni gazdaságot fojtogató szankciókat. Irán válaszul fokozatosan felmondta a saját kötelezettségvállalásait, egyebek között fokozta az urándúsítást.
A bécsi egyeztetések megrekedtek, elsősorban a Washington és Teherán közötti nézeteltérések miatt: Irán a többi között a síita államra kirótt szankciók feloldásától teszi függővé az egyeztetések sikerét. A teheráni vezetés többször leszögezte, hogy bár nyitott a tárgyalásokra, és bizakodóan tekint az újabb megbeszélések elé, a végső megállapodás előtt elvárja a büntetőintézkedések feloldását.
