A döntést a BBC az Oroszországban pénteken elfogadott törvénnyel indokolta, amely alapján szabadságvesztéssel sújtható az orosz hadsereg műveleteire vonatkozó rémhírek terjesztése, valamint azzal, hogy az Ukrajna ellen folytatott háborúval összefüggésben blokkolták az orosz nyelvű hírportálját.
Az orosz tömegtájékoztatási és távközlési felügyelet(Roszkomnadzor) pénteken korlátozta az oroszországi hozzáférést a Lettországból üzemeltetett Meduza hírportál és az amerikai költségvetésből finanszírozott Szabadság Rádió orosz nyelvű híroldalához.
