Az orosz külügyminisztérium közölte, hogy a lépés válasz az orosz tisztviselők elleni személyes szankciókra. A kanadai miniszterelnök, Justin Trudeau politikáját ruszofóbnak bélyegezte.
A listán szerepel még Sarah Fischer konzervatív párti szóvivő, Daniel Goldberg, a Telesat vezérigazgatója, Stephane Perrault választási főnök és több prominens ukrán származású kanadai is.
A február óta tartó ukrajnai orosz invázió miatt Kanada több mint 1400 személyt és szervezetet szankcionált Oroszországban, Ukrajnában és Belaruszban.
