 A párt vezető testületét csaknem öt hónappal a február végi választási vereséget követően azért kellett összehívni, mert több vezető politikus Peter Pellegrini volt szlovák kormányfő vezetésével júniusban kilépett a pártból. Pellegrinivel együtt az öt alelnök közül hárman távoztak.
 Az 1999-ben Fico által alapított Irány – Szociáldemokrácia sokáig a legerősebb politikai párt volt Szlovákiában, és abszolút többséggel rendelkezett a törvényhozásban. Azonban sokat veszített népszerűségéből a Ján Kuciak oknyomozó újságíró és barátnője 2018-as meggyilkolása nyomán felszínre került korrupciós botrányok nyomán. Az ennek kapcsán kibontakozó tömegtüntetések Fico lemondásához vezettek a kormányfői tisztségről.
 Utódja, Pellegrini viszont azóta népszerűségben túlszárnyalta Ficót. Egy közelmúltban végzett felmérés szerint Pellegrini az alakulóban lévő Hang-Szociáldemokrácia (Hlas-Sociálná demokracia) nevű új pártjával már kétszer akkora támogatottsággal bír, mint az Irány – Szociáldemokrácia.
