Rendkívül fontosnak nevezte szombaton Volodimir Zelenszkij ukrán elnök, hogy „az orosz dominanciájú” Szovjetunió által elkövetett népirtásként emlékezzenek meg az 1932–1933-as nagy éhínségről, ukrán nevén a holodomorról, amelyben ukránok milliói haltak meg.
„Megpróbáltak kiirtani, legázolni, kínozni bennünket. El akarták kendőzni a valóságot előlünk, és örökre agyonhallgatni a rettenetes bűntetteket. Kudarcot vallottak” – jelentette ki beszédében az ukrán elnök, amelyben a Joszif Sztálin szovjet diktátor idején történt éhínségről emlékezett meg.
„A legmélyebb sajnálattal és tisztelettel adózunk több millió emberünk emlékének” – tette hozzá Volodimir Zelenszkij. A tragédiát Ukrajnában holodomor néven tartják számon, amely „halálra éheztetést” jelent. Szombaton tartották az éhínség emléknapját.
Zelenszkij a tömeges éhezést Oroszország Ukrajna elleni jelenlegi inváziójához hasonlította, amelynek során közszolgáltatási és gabonaexporthoz használt létesítményeket támadnak.
„Ez egy olyan folyamat, amelyben a totalitárius szovjet politika és a jelenlegi orosz politika irányvonala egybevág. A sátánt nem állították meg. Nem lakolt meg. És most mi fogjuk megállítani” – jelentette ki Volodimir Zelenszkij. Oroszország álláspontja szerint a holodomor nem volt népirtás, és nem csak Ukrajnában volt éhínség a 30-as években.

A nyilatkozatot a nemzeti kisebbségek frakciójához tartozó Nicolae Miroslav Petreţchi képviselő olvasta fel a szenátus és a képviselőház együttes ülésén.
