Az illegális bevándorlás kezeléséért felelős Gerhard Karner belügyminiszter bejelentette, hogy Ausztria vétót emel Horvátország tervezett schengeni csatlakozása elé.
Az osztrák belügyminiszter kilátásba helyezte Horvátország kérelmének vétóját, ami Zágrábban nagy felbolydulást keltett azután, hogy pár napja még áldását adta az Európai Bizottság Románia, Bulgária és Horvátország csatlakozására a schengeni övezethez.
Az Európai Bizottság megállapította: a három ország készen áll arra, hogy a határok nélküli szabad uniós mozgást biztosító övezet teljes jogú tagjává váljon. Horvátországról kiemelték, hogy az maradéktalanul teljesítette a belső határellenőrzések nélküli schengeni térséghez való csatlakozáshoz szükséges feltételeket.
Ezzel szemben Gerhard Karner konzervatív néppárti belügyminiszter kijelentette, hogy Ausztria nem járul hozzá a schengeni övezet bővítéséhez.
Megbukott a határvédelem
„A rendszer nem működik megfelelően. Az európai helyzet nagyon világosan mutatja, hogy a külső határok védelme megbukott” – vélekedett Gerhard Karner a Der Standard osztrák lap szerint.
Eddig 100 ezer bevándorlót fogtak el tengerparttal nem rendelkező országok. 75 ezer közülük nincs regisztrálva. Ausztria azért teszi ezt, mert az itt élők biztonsága is veszélyben van. Ha egy rendszer nem működik, akkor nem lehet még nagyobbá tenni – indokolta Gerhard Karner a csatlakozási kezdeményezés elutasítását.
Mivel a határok védelme megbukott, a belügyminiszter szerint még fontosabb az európai országok számára saját határaik védelme.
Ausztrián kívül például Németország, Franciaország, a Cseh Köztársaság, Dánia, Svédország és az EU-n kívüli, a schengeni megállapodásban részes Norvégia végezne belső határellenőrzést.

Gerhard Karner belügyminiszter úgy véli, fontos a szabad mozgás biztosítása, de legalább ennyire fontos a biztonság is.
Határozottabb európai határvédelmi politikát és az Európai Unión belüli határellenőrzés újbóli bevezetésének megfontolását sürgette Gerhard Karner osztrák belügyminiszter Luxembourgban, az EU-tagországok belügyminisztereinek tanácskozását megelőzően.
Gerhard Karner azzal érvelt, hogy az EU menekültpolitikájával összhangban, meghatározott biztonsági követelményeknek egyensúlyba kell kerülniük az unión belüli szabad mozgást lehetővé tevő szabályozással.
„A mozgás szabadságának biztosítása fontos, elengedhetetlen része az Európai Uniónak, de a biztonságot is szavatolnunk kell. Ez olyan fontos, hogy bizonyos helyzetekben szükség lehet az EU-n belüli határellenőrzésre is” – fogalmazott.
Egyes uniós tagországok, köztük Németország, Franciaország és Ausztria a 2015-ös menekültválságot követően ideiglenes határellenőrzést vezetett be, részint a terrorizmusra hivatkozva.
