Franciaország európai uniós soros elnöksége keretében a halálbüntetés globális eltörlése érdekében fog kampányt indítani – jelentette be Emmanuel Macron francia elnök szombaton a halálbüntetés franciaországi eltörlésének 40. évfordulója alkalmából.
Mint mondta, Párizsban terveznek konferenciát tartani azon országok részvételével, ahol a büntetésnek ezt a legsúlyosabb fokozatát még alkalmazzák, esetleg alkalmazását felfüggesztették.
Macron beszélt arról is, hogy Franciaország, amely 2022 első felében fogja átvenni az Európai Unió soros elnökségét, ezen felül a nemzetközi közösséggel egy ENSZ határozatot fog kezdeményezni, kötelezővé téve az országoknak, hogy évente jelentsék a meghozott halálos ítéletek és a végrehajtott kivégzések számát.
Macron sajtótájékoztatóján részt vett Robert Badinter, Francois Mitterrand volt államfő igazságügyi minisztere, aki 1981-ben keresztülvitte a halálbüntetés eltörlést a francia parlamentben.
Franciaország a világon a 35. állam volt, ahol betiltották a halálbüntetést. Bár időközben számos más ország is csatlakozott, például Kínában, Iránban és az Egyesült Államokban továbbra is létezik ez a büntetési forma.
A nyugat-afrikai Sierra Leone pénteken jelentette be – két nappal a halálbüntetés elleni világnap (október 10-e) előtt –, hogy eltörli a halálbüntetést.
A francia közvélemény mindemellett felmérések szerint erősen megosztott a halálbüntetés kérdésében. A 2022-es francia elnökválasztáson Macron kihívójaként induló Eric Zemmour jobboldali publicista például jelezte, hogy általánosságban véve támogatja a halálbüntetést.
