Az EU 27 tagállama megállapodott, hogy a jövő évi európai parlamenti választásokat június 6. és 9. között tartják – közölte az EU svéd soros elnöksége szerdán.
A választásra ötévente kerül sor. A választásokat követően az Európai Parlament szavaz az Európai Bizottság – az EU végrehajtó szerve – új vezetőjének megválasztásáról, valamint a biztosok teljes testületének jóváhagyásáról.
A választásokon nemzeti pártok versengenek, ám az európai parlamenti képviselők megválasztásuk után nemzetek feletti képviselőcsoportok tagjai lesznek. A legtöbb nemzeti párt európai szintű politikai párthoz kapcsolódik.
A parlamentnek jelenleg 705 képviselője van. A legkevesebb képviselője, hat, Máltának van. A legtöbb, 96, pedig Németországnak.
A legutóbbi választások alkalmával, 2019 májusában 751 képviselő került be a testületbe, azonban a létszám az Egyesült Királyság kilépését követően 705-re csökkent. A képviselői helyek elosztását az európai uniós szerződések határozzák meg.
Az európai parlamenti választásokat az egyes tagállamok választási szabályai szerint bonyolítják le.
