Az Európai Parlament csütörtöki ülésén szokatlan eset történt, amikor Diana Sosoaca, az SOS Romania párt képviselője hangos bekiabálásokkal zavarta meg az ülés menetét. A képviselő, aki egy balkáni szent ikonját tartotta a kezében, Valerie Hayer liberális szónok beszédét szakította félbe kiáltásaival.
„Embereket öltél, jogom van beszélni” – hangzott el többek között Sosoaca szájából, feltehetően Ursula von der Leyennek, az Európai Bizottság újonnan megválasztott elnökének címezve. Az eset után Roberta Metsola, a parlament elnöke utasítást adott Sosoaca ülésteremből való eltávolítására.
A román képviselő, aki először kapott helyet az Európai Parlamentben, már korábban is felhívta magára a figyelmet szokatlan viselkedésével. Első parlamenti napján hagyományos román népviseletben jelent meg, és olyan tárgyakat hozott magával, mint a mirha és az illatos gyanta.
A 444 írása alapján Sosoaca parlamenti tevékenységét eddig is ellentmondásos javaslatok és cselekedetek jellemezték. Korábban felvetette, hogy papot kellene hívni az Európai Parlament felszentelésére és az „ördögök elűzésére”, illetve hasonló javaslatot tett korábban a román parlamentben is.

Charles Michel, az európai uniós tagállamok állam-, illetve kormányfőit tömörítő Európai Tanács elnöke pénteken bejelentette, hogy korábbi döntésével ellentétben mégsem indul a júniusi európai parlamenti választásokon.
Charles Michel, a közösségi oldalán közzétett üzenetében jelentette be, hogy úgy döntött, visszavonja európai parlamenti (EP) képviselői jelöltségét, és kitölti mandátumát az Európai Tanács élén.
Bejegyzésében döntésének okai között említette, hogy nem kívánja EP-képviselői jelöltségével elvonni a figyelmet tanácsi munkájáról, illetve azt sem, hogy döntése megossza az intézményt. Közölte: januári bejelentése szélsőséges reakciókat váltott ki.
Mint kiemelte, nem az Európai Tanácson belül, hanem azon kívül, ugyanis a választásokon való indulásának lehetősége, lerövidítve tanácsi elnöki mandátumát, néhány hónappal előre hozta volna utódja kinevezését. A személyét ért támadások arra késztették, hogy elgondolkodjon választási elkötelezettsége értelmén és hatásán – emelte ki.
„Nem leszek jelölt a júniusi európai választásokon” – fogalmazott Michel, majd megerősítette: kitölti az Európai Tanács élén novemberben lejáró mandátumát. Charles Michel január 7-én jelentette be, hogy a Reformer Mozgalom (MR) vallon párt listájának élén indul a júniusi európai parlamenti választásokon.
