Geidt nem jelölte meg pontosan távozása okát, azonban azt mondta, szerinte is jogos kérdés, hogy a miniszterelnök megsértette-e a miniszterekre vonatkozó kódexet a Partygate-botrány kezelésével.
Az ügy lényege, hogy a Downing Streeten annak ellenére tartottak bulikat kormánytagok és magas rangú brit tisztségviselők társaságában 2020 tavaszán, hogy Nagy-Britanniában közben szigorú lezárások voltak érvényben a koronavírus miatt. Az ügyben vizsgálat indult, ami megállapította, hogy az egyik bulin Johnson is részt vett.
A miniszterekre külön kódex vonatkozik a brit kormányban, ezek szabályai szerint a kormány tagjainak kötelességük betartani a törvényeket, ha pedig ezt nem veszik figyelembe, akkor le kell mondaniuk. Boris Johnson azonban nem mondott le, csupán úgy döntött, hogy ő és szabálysértő miniszterei is pénzbírságot fizetnek.
