A döntés mögött az áll, hogy londoni vezetők úgy látják: bármelyik pillanatban tűzszünetet köthet Oroszország és Ukrajna, ebben az esetben pedig azonnal meg is indulhat Ukrajna területére a NATO békefenntartó küldetése, melynek célja egy újabb orosz támadás elrettentése.
Sir Keir Starmer miniszterelnök utalt is erre, amikor múlt hét vasárnap azt mondta: „műveleti fázisba” jutott az Ukrajnába készülő békefenntartó misszió tervezése.
A lap kitér arra is, hogy a brit különleges erők nem egy békefenntartó feladatokra kiképzett formáció, viszont nagy előnyük, hogy gyorsan bevethetők, illetve jártasak a felderítésben és hírszerzési feladatok elvégzésében is.
Oroszország többször is jelezte, hogy nem hajlandók elfogadni, hogy NATO-katonák legyenek Ukrajna területén.

A jelentés szerint a diplomata az UATV csatornának nyilatkozva azt mondta, most fontos annak a megértése, hogy mennyire valós az orosz támadás veszélye. Úgy vélte Oroszország a mostani „háborús ködösítéssel” egyszerűen csak a tárgyalásokat akarja befolyásolni.
Prisztajko hangsúlyozta: „a mi feladatunk és a partnereink feladata az, hogy különválasszuk az igazságot a fenyegetéstől, és megértsük, mennyire valós a veszélye annak, hogy diplomáciai módszerekkel ne lehessen elejét venni a háború aktív szakaszának.”
Riporteri kérdésre válaszolva, hogy Ukrajna behívna-e brit katonaságot a területére, a nagykövet kijelentette: „ha valós a fenyegetés, ha megkezdődnek az aktív hadműveletek, mindent kérni fogunk, beleértve brit csapatok behívását a területünkre.”
