Bár hosszasan dicsérte az amerikai nagykövet Washington és Budapest kapcsolatának alakulását, újévi beszédében mégis három olyan dolog fontosságáról beszélt David Cornstein, amely egyelőre nem jellemző a magyar kormány külgazdasági és külpolitikai irányára.
Cornstein beszéde első fele a tavaly elért pozitívumokról szólt, többek között kiemelte, hogy februárban Mike Pompeo Magyarországon járt, 2011 óta első amerikai külügyminiszterként, valamint, hogy májusban Donald Trump Orbán Viktort fogadta a Fehér Házban, egy jól sikerültnek mondott találkozón.
A nagykövet szerint mindez jó alapot ad a vitás ügyek rendezéséhez és a kapcsolatok további erősítéséhez, majd megemlített két érzékeny területet: az Oroszország és Kína jelentette fenyegetést, valamint Ukrajna „támogatását a folyamatos orosz agresszióval szemben”.
Magyarország egyelőre a kárpátaljai magyar kisebbség anyanyelvi használatát veszélyeztető oktatási és nyelvtörvény módosítását várja, addig nem hajlandó elősegíteni Ukrajna közeledését a NATO-hoz és Ukrajnához. Nem tűnik könnyebnek az orosz és kínai fenyegetés visszaszorítása sem, tekintve a kínai pénzből megépítendő Budapest-Belgrád vasútvonal tervét és az orosz hitelből történő paksi atomerőmű-bővítést.
