A mentőszolgálat szóvivője szerint radioaktív sugárzás kibocsátásnak kockázata nem áll fenn, a lángokat sikerült megfékezni.
A tűz valószínűleg az épület tetején, a gázpalacktárolónál keletkezett. Az épületegyüttes tetején munkálatok zajlottak, valószínűleg közben gyulladtak fel a lángok.
A képeken nem csak az épület tetején látszik sűrű füst, a Twitter felhasználói olyan felvételeket is közöltek, amin a tető alatti szintekről kiáramló fekete füst látszik.
A Waal-folyó mentén, a Hágától száz kilométerre található erőmű 1969-ben épült. Az üzem viszonylag kis kapacitással, 58 megawatt teljesítménnyel működött 1997-es leszerelése előtt.
A radioaktív anyagokat 2005-ben szállították el, az épület lebontását 2045-re tervezik befejezni.
