Két időközi parlamenti képviselőválasztást is elvesztett a kormányzó brit Konzervatív Párt. Az eredmények ismertté válása után, pénteken bejelentette lemondását Oliver Dowden, a párt elnöke, Boris Johnson miniszterelnök azonban egyenes utalást tett arra, hogy nem tervezi távozását.
Előző nap a délnyugat-angliai Devon megye Tiverton and Honiton nevű választókörzetében, illetve a közép-angliai Wakefield városában tartottak alsóházi képviselőválasztást. Eddig mindkét választókerületnek konzervatív képviselője volt a londoni alsóházban, ám a devoni választást a harmadik legnagyobb országos brit parlamenti párt, a Liberális Demokraták jelöltje nyerte, Wakefieldben pedig a legnagyobb ellenzéki erő, a Munkáspárt győzött.
A két választást szoros figyelem kísérte, mivel az eredmények a politikai elemzői közösség és a sajtó szerint potenciálisan sorsdöntőnek bizonyulhatnak Boris Johnson eddig is botrányoktól kísért miniszterelnöki pályafutásának jövője szempontjából.
