Az ENSZ Közgyűlése helyi idő szerint csütörtökön jóváhagyta az osztrák Volker Türk kinevezését a világszervezet új emberi jogi főbiztosává.
Volker Türköt António Guterres ENSZ-főtitkár javasolta főbiztosnak a chilei Michelle Bachelet utódjául, akinek hivatali ideje augusztus 31-én ért véget. Türk jelenleg Guterres irodájában politikáért felelős főtitkárhelyettesként dolgozik.
Az új főbiztos két másik jelölt, az argentin Federico Villegas és a szenegáli Adama Dieng ellenében nyerte el a magas tisztséget.
Az osztrák külügyminisztérium üdvözölte Türk kinevezését, és teljes támogatásáról biztosította az új főbiztost, akit „az emberi jogok szenvedélyes védelmezőjének” nevezett.
