Boris Johnson ma lemondott a konzervatívok vezetői tisztségéről, azonban őszig miniszterelnök marad – tudta meg a BBC csütörtökön. Közölte, már felállított egy új, átmeneti kormányt, amely a következő időszakban viszi majd az ügyeket, az ő irányításával, ameddig ki nem derül, ki lesz a konzervatívok új vezetője. A pártelnökválasztás menetrendjét jövő héten teszik közzé.
Boris Johnson körül sorjáznak a belpolitikai botrányok, pártja és kormánya magas rangú tagjai kérték a napokban, hogy álljon fel a miniszterelnöki székből – erre mindezidáig nem volt hajlandó. Az elmúlt 24 órában sorra mondtak le körülette a kormánytagok, gyakorlatilag mostanra teljesen elfogyott körülötte a levegő.

A héten először Rishi Sunak pénzügyminiszter és Sajid Javid egészségügyi miniszter mondott le, és csütörtökig 57-re emelkedett azoknak a minisztereknek, államtitkároknak és más kormánytisztviselőknek a száma, akik ugyancsak lemondásukkal igyekeztek rábírni Johnsont a távozásra.
Johnson lemondása azt jelenti, hogy Nagy-Britannia hat éven belül már a negyedik vezetőjét fogyaszthatja: David Cameron 2016-ban mondott le, Theresa May 2019-ben, Boris Johnson pedig most, 2022-ben.
