Charles Michel, az Európai Tanács elnöke bocsánatot kért Ursula von der Leyentől, az Európai Bizottság elnökétől a múlt héten Ankarában elkövetett udvariatlansága miatt – közölték uniós források az Európai Parlament (EP) házbizottságaként működő Elnökök Értekezletének brüsszeli tanácskozása után.
Michel szerint „durva udvariatlanság” volt, hogy nem reagált a helyzetre és nem kért még egy széket Von der Leyen számára.
Michel az uniós bizottság elnöke mellett bocsánatot kért minden nőtől, akit esetleg megbánthatott udvariatlanságával.
Az uniós tagállamok vezetőit tömörítő tanács elnöke azt, hogy nem állt fel azonnal, azzal magyarázta, nem kívánta elrontani az Európai Unió és Törökország közötti kapcsolatok és az együttműködés javítását célzó „rendkívül fontos, hosszú időn át előkészített találkozót”.
Von der Leyen közölte, hogy az eset nem ismétlődhet meg, az uniós intézmények elnökeit egyforma szinten kell kezelni. Ennek érdekében az uniós intézmények megkezdték egy dokumentum előkészítését, ami világos iránymutatásokat tartalmaz majd arra vonatkozóan, hogy a jövőbeni utazások során milyen protokollnak kell érvényesülnie olyan esetekben, amikor az Európai Uniót az intézményi vezetők közül többen képviselik.
Az Európai Tanács elnöke és Ursula von der Leyen április 6-án közösen tárgyalt Recep Tayyip Erdogan török államfővel.
A találkozó kezdetekor kiderült, hogy csak két fő részére készítettek ki széket, amelyeken Erdogan és Michel foglalt helyet, miközben Von der Leyenek elnökének csak egy távolabbi díványon jutott hely.
