Eredménytelen volt az amerikai képviselőház elnökválasztásának első fordulója kedden, amit két héttel Kevin McCarthy korábbi elnök leváltása után tartottak meg.
A Kongresszus alsóházában a többséget adó republikánusok hivatalos jelöltje Jim Jordan 200 voksot kapott, míg 20 republikánus tag nem rá szavazott, a demokraták egységesen saját képviselőházi vezetőjüket, Hakeem Jeffriest támogatták, aki így 212 szavazatot gyűjtött be.
A 435 tagú Képviselőházban a keddi szavazáskor 431 tag volt jelen, ezért 216 voks jelent többséget, ami elegendő lenne az új házelnök megválasztásához.
Az első, név szerinti, szavazási fordulóban a két hete republikánus kezdeményezésre eltávolított előző házelnök, Kevin McCarthy is kapott több szavazatot, miközben ő a republikánusok többsége által a helyére jelölt Jim Jordant támogatta.
A tervek szerint a Kongresszus alsóháza még kedden ismét összeül, hogy megpróbálja megválasztani vezetőjét.
Az amerikai képviselőház házelnök hiányában működésképtelen, így nem tud vitát folytatni és határozni az izraeli és ukrajnai katonai-biztonsági támogatás összegéről és folyósításáról sem.
