Törökország lezárta a légterét az Örményországból induló repülőjáratok előtt – közölte Mevlüt Cavusoglu török külügyminiszter szerdán az NTV török hírtelevíziónak adott interjújában, hozzátéve, hogy a lépés egy jereváni emlékmű átadására adott válasz.
A török külügyminisztérium közleménye szerint a Nemezis-emlékmű azoknak állít emléket, akik az 1920-as évek elején az Oszmán Birodalom diplomatái, valamint azok családtagjai ellen hajtottak végre merényleteket.
A török diplomácia vezetője az NTV-nek azt mondta, hogy ha Örményország az emlékművet nem távolítja el, Ankara további lépéseket tesz.
Örményország szerint az Oszmán Birodalom katonái 1915-től mintegy 1,5 millió örményt gyilkoltak le, amit Jereván népirtásnak minősít. Törökország túlzónak tartja ezeket a számokat, és tagadja, hogy a gyilkosságokat módszeresen hajtották volna végre.
