A jelentés szerint az észt diplomácia vezetője elmondta: „Ha valódi biztonsági garanciákról beszélünk, az azt jelenti, hogy igazságos béke jön létre. Azután a NATO-tagságról beszélünk. De az USA nélkül ez lehetetlen. És akkor a (garanciák) bármilyen formájáról beszélünk a „csizma a földön” értelemben.”
Trump amerikai választási győzelme felkeltette a félelmeket, hogy olyan megállapodást kényszeríthet Ukrajnára, amely Moszkva számára előnyös, azzal fenyegetve, hogy megszakítja az amerikai katonai támogatást. Ez felgyorsította a vitát Ukrajna európai szövetségesei között arról, hogyan támogassák az országot Washington álláspontjának esetleges megváltozása esetén.
Tsakhna hangsúlyozza, hogy Európának „nagyon nehéz” lesz biztonsági garanciákat nyújtania Ukrajnának az Egyesült Államok részvétele nélkül, különösen, ha az Oroszországgal való közvetlen konfrontációba bevonhatja a NATO-t. Észtország azonban ragaszkodik az európai erőfeszítések fokozásához.
„Nagy-Britanniának lehetősége és teljes felelőssége van, hogy vezető szerepet vállaljon Ukrajna biztonságának megerősítésében, Lengyelország pedig már most is nagyon aktív szerepet játszik” – mondta az észt külügyminiszter. Észtország, amely a GDP 3,4%-át költi védelemre, szintén felszólítja a NATO-t, hogy emelje 2,5%-ra a minimális kiadásokat.
„Amink van, az a pénz. Nagyon sok pénzünk van. Nem hiszek azoknak a kormányoknak, amelyek azt mondják, hogy nem kérhetnek többet az emberektől. Európának be kellene ruháznia védelmi képességeinek a bővítésébe. Ukrajna sorsa meghatározza egész Európa biztonsági architektúráját. Ukrajna immár a NATO első védelmi vonala” – hangoztatta Margus Tsakhna.
