Boris Johnson bejelentette, hogy bár megvan a támogatottsága hozzá, mégsem jelölteti magát kormányfőnek.
Liz Truss néhány napja történt lemondása után a Konzervatív Párton belül több jelölt neve is felmerült lehetséges kormányfőjelöltként. Sokan azt valószínűsítették, hogy a Liz Truss előtt lemondott Boris Johnson ismét megpróbálhat visszatérni miniszterelnökként.
Most maga Boris Johnson mondta azt, hogy ez nem lehetséges. A BBC szerint a konzervatív politikus azt mondta: támogatottsága meglenne ahhoz, hogy jelöltesse magát, de arra a következtetésre jutott, hogy nem lenne helyes dolog, ha most így tenne.
Méghozzá azért, mert a Konzervatív Párt most nagyon megosztott, és emiatt szerinte, ha megválasztanák, akkor sem tudna hatékonyan kormányozni.
2024-ben még visszatérhet
Johnson egyben azt is közölte, hogy a jövőben nincs kizárva, hogy ismét megpróbál miniszterelnök lenni.

Boris Johnson kiesésével úgy fest, hogy ketten maradtak a versenyben: Rishi Sunak volt pénzügyminiszter, illetve Penny Mordaunt egykori védelmi miniszter. Az elemzők Boris Johnson visszalépése előtt még azt valószínűsítették, hogy vagy Johnson, vagy Sunak lehet a következő miniszterelnök, mivel Mordauntnak viszonylag alacsony volt a támogatottsága eddig.
