Joe Biden amerikai elnök nemzetbiztonsági tanácsadója, Jake Sullivan szerint komolyan veszélyezteti a stabilitást, ha az Egyesült Királyság egyoldalúan felmondja az északír jegyzőkönyvet – írja a Daily Mail.
Az északír jegyzőkönyv az Európai Unió és Nagy-Britannia közötti megállapodás része, melynek célja, hogy megőrizzék az Ír-sziget békéjét. Az ugyanis, hogy a brexittel Írország és Észak-Írország között húzódna az EU határa, szembemenne az 1998-ban elfogadott, a véres északír konfliktust lezáró nagypénteki egyezménnyel. Ezért az EU és Nagy-Britannia megállapodása szerint az Ír-sziget két része között továbbra sem lesz határellenőrzés, hanem a vámhatár Észak-Írország és Nagy-Britannia többi része között fog húzódni.
Biden nemzetbiztonsági tanácsadója azután szólalt meg, hogy Lord Frost brit brexitügyi miniszter novemberi határidőt adott meg a jegyzőkönyv véglegesítésére, ellenkező esetben Nagy-Britannia egyoldalúan felmondja azt.
Sullivan szerint a miniszter kijelentése komolyan aggasztja az Egyesült Államokat.
A britpárti északír unionisták keményen bírálták a jegyzőkönyvet, mivel az szerintük megbontaná az Egyesült Királyság egységét, és az Ír-sziget újraegyesítését segítené elő. Idén áprilisban zavargások is kitörtek Észak-Írország több városában.
A brit kormány újra akarja tárgyalni a jegyzőkönyvet az EU-val, de a tárgyalások megfeneklettek. Az Európai Bizottság alelnöke, Maros Šefčovič tegnap Dublinban jelentette be, hogy az Európai Unió új javaslatokkal fog előállni a jegyzőkönyvre vonatkozóan.
