 Megszületetett a megállapodás Spanyolország és Nagy-Britannia között, amelynek értelmében Gibraltár a schengeni övezet része lesz 2021. január 1-től.
 A megállapodás néhány órával az előtt jött létre, hogy csütörtök éjfélkor véget ér a brit EU-tagság megszűnése után életbe lépett átmeneti időszak.
 „Megkötöttük a kezdeti megállapodást Nagy-Britanniával, amely alapul fog szolgálni az Európai Unió és az Egyesült Királyság között a jövőben Gibraltárról megkötendő szerződéshez” – mondta Madridban Arancha González Laya spanyol külügyminiszter, aki hozzátette, hogy a megállapodás részeként Gibraltár az uniós megállapodások, így a schengeni egyezmény részese marad.
 December 31-én éjfélkor lejár a Brexit január 31-i életbe lépése után bevezetett átmeneti időszak, Nagy-Britannia és a tengeren túli területei így nem lesznek részei az Európai Unió egységes piacának és vámuniójának.
 A Spanyolország legdélebbi csücskében található, brit fennhatóság alatt lévő területnek a schengeni unióhoz tartozásával a határellenőrzés a spanyol határ helyett a nemzetközi repülőtéren is elvégezhető. Az egyelőre nem világos, ki fogja végezni az ellenőrzést.
 A csütörtökön az utolsó pillanatban megszületett megállapodás híján a határ túloldalán dolgozó több tízezer gibraltárinak és spanyolnak kellett volna naponta határellenőrzésen átesni és útlevelet pecsételtetni – mondta a spanyol külügyminiszter.

 Porosenko a schengeni egyezmény 35. évfordulója kapcsán azt írta: Schengen megnyitotta az európaiak előtt a szabad helyváltoztatás lehetőségét a földrészen határellenőrzések nélkül, és az egyik tartóoszlopa lett az európai integrációs projektnek. „Arról álmodom, hogy Ukrajna egyszer a schengeni övezet része legyen, ennek jegyében javasoltam 2017-ben a közös sikerünk érdekében az Ukrajna-EU csúcstalálkozón az EU vezetőinek, hogy kezdjék el Ukrajnával a tárgyalásokat a schengeni övezethez történő csatlakozásról, ami ambiciózus és bonyolult projekt.
 A volt elnök szerint ő és munkatársai készen állt a csatlakozási terv sikeres megvalósítására. Sajnálatosnak nevezte, hogy Zelenszkij a csapatával nem dolgozik ennek a stratégiai feladatnak megvalósításán.
