 Megszavazták az Európai Unió tagállamai a következő, szám szerint nyolcadik szankciós csomagot Oroszország ellen. 
 A csomagban az eddigieken kívül újabb orosz termékekre rendeltek el behozatali tilalmat, bővítették a beutazási tilalommal és vagyonbefagyasztással sújtott személyek körét, és ársapkát határoztak meg azokra az Oroszországból induló olajszállítmányokra, amelyeket uniós vagy G7-országhoz tartozó szállítmányozó vállalat juttat el egy harmadik országba.

 A nyolcadik szankciós csomag jóváhagyása az Európai Unió határozott válasza arra, hogy Oroszország bejelentette Ukrajna négy régiójának, a donyecki és a luhanszki „népköztársaság”, valamint Herszon és Zaporizzsja megye jogellenes annektálását. Von der Leyen posztjában azt is írja, hogy az Európai Unió soha nem fogja elfogadni sem az annexiót, sem Putyin „látszat-népszavazásait”.
 Az Európai Bizottság szeptember végén tett javaslatot az Oroszországgal szembeni nyolcadik szankciócsomagra, amivel az EU megtiltja a repülőgépgyártáshoz használható termékek, bizonyos elektronikus eszközök, valamint egyes vegyi anyagok kivitelét Oroszországba, számos orosz termék importját, szolgáltatások nyújtását orosz vállalatok és hatóságok számára, valamint megtiltja az uniós állampolgárok számára, hogy orosz állami vállalatok vezető testületében szerepet vállaljanak. A csomag meghatározza az orosz kőolaj árának felső határát is.
