 A VAB az 1970-es évek óta áll a francia haderő szolgálatában, több ezer darabbal rendelkeznek belőle. A jármű elsődleges feladata a gyalogsági alakulatok mobilitásának elősegítése, minimális fegyverzettel, egy 7,62-es vagy egy 12,7 milliméteres géppuskával van ellátva.
 Ahogy számos más, Ukrajnának küldött haditechnikai eszköz, a VAB is épp hadrendből kivonás alatt áll, utódja a VBMR és a VBMR-L páncélozott katonai jármű lesz.
