Kétnapos látogatást kezd hétfőn Kijevben Matteo Zuppi olasz bíboros, akit Ferenc pápa békemisszióval bízott meg a háború befejezése érdekében – közölte az rbc.ua hírportál a Vatikán közleményére hivatkozva.
A jelentés szerint Zuppi bolognai érsek és az olasz püspöki konferencia elnöke Ferenc küldötteként látogat Kijevbe. A Vatikán kijelentette, hogy a látogatás fő célja az, hogy „figyelmesen meghallgassák az ukrán hatóságokat az igazságos világ megvalósításának lehetséges módjairól, és támogassák az emberiség gesztusait, amelyek segíthetnek a feszültségek csökkentésében”.
A hírportál emlékeztetett arra, hogy a háború 2022 februári kitörése óta Ferenc pápa és a Vatikán megpróbálta beajánlani magát lehetséges békeközvetítőnek, de eddig nem jártak sikerrel. Májusban Ferenc pápa megbízta Zuppit egy békefenntartó misszióval, „hogy megpróbáljon véget vetni az ukrajnai háborúnak”.
Matteo Zuppi a római székhelyű Sanct-Egidio közösségből származik, egy béke és igazság mellett elkötelezett csoportból, amely 1992-ben egy megállapodást kötött, amely véget vetett a mozambiki polgárháborúnak, amelyben körülbelül egymillió ember halt meg, és körülbelül négymillióan kényszerültek elhagyni otthonukat. A pápa 2019-ben bíborossá nevezte ki, tavaly pedig az Olasz Püspöki Konferencia elnökévé választották.
A háború kitörése után Ferenc pápa kétértelmű álláspontra helyezkedett, és békére szólított fel anélkül, hogy bármit is mondott volna az orosz invázióról. Ferenc pápa elsősorban arra mutatott hajlandóságot, hogy beszéljen Vlagyimir Putyin orosz elnökkel, hogy békére szólítsa fel, és „kulturált embernek” nevezte az orosz diktátort.
Volodimir Zelenszkij elnök májusban találkozott Ferenc pápával, és kijelentette, hogy Kijevnek „nincs szüksége közvetítőkre Ukrajna és az agresszor között”. Szerinte a kérdés az, hogy ki kell dolgozni egy cselekvési tervet az igazságos ukrajnai békéért.
