Ukrajnába látogatott csütörtökön David Cameron, Nagy-Britannia újonnan kinevezett külügyminisztere, alig néhány nappal hivatalba lépése után, hogy az ukrán elnökkel, miniszterelnökkel és külügyminiszterrel tárgyaljon – számolt be az rbc.ua hírportál.
A jelentés szerint Cameron az ukrán fővárosban elmondta: „Továbbra is erkölcsi támogatást, diplomáciai támogatást, gazdasági támogatást, de mindenekelőtt katonai támogatást fogunk nyújtani önöknek nemcsak idén és jövőre, hanem bármennyi ideig, amíg szükséges.” Azt is megjegyezte: „Oroszország úgy gondolja, hogy ki tudja várni ezt a háborút, és a Nyugat előbb-utóbb máshová fogja fordítani a figyelmét, de az ilyen feltételezések távol állnak az igazságtól.”
A brit külügyminiszter látogatása először Volodimir Zelenszkij elnök bejelentése után vált ismertté, aki személyesen találkozott Cameronnal Kijevben. „David Cameron, Nagy-Britannia külügyekért, nemzetközösségért és fejlesztésért felelős államtitkára első munkalátogatását az új pozíciójában Ukrajnában tette” – írta Zelenszkij, és közzétett egy videofelvételt is a találkozóról.
Amint arról az Elnöki Hivatal beszámolt, Zelenszkij és Cameron a Fekete-tenger biztonsági helyzetéről és az alternatív gabonafolyosó további működéséről tárgyalt. Különös figyelmet fordítottunk a befagyasztott orosz vagyon elkobzásának kérdésére Ukrajna helyreállítása érdekében” – írta az ukrán kormányfő. A felek tárgyaltak az ukrán export támogatásáról is, beleértve a háborús kockázati biztosítást is. Ukrajna miniszterelnöke megköszönte Nagy-Britanniának az ukrán katonák kiképzését.

David Cameron volt miniszterelnököt nevezte ki külügyminiszterré hétfőn Rishi Sunak brit kormányfő.
Cameron 2010 és 2016 között töltötte be a miniszterelnöki tisztséget a kormányzó brit Konzervatív Párt vezetőjeként, de a brit EU-tagságról 2016 júniusában tartott – a kilépést pártolók szűk, 51,89 százalékos többségű győzelmével végződött – népszavazás után lemondott, egyben visszaadta alsóházi képviselői mandátumát is.
A törvényerejű brit politikai szokásjog megköveteli ugyanis, hogy a miniszteri rangú kabinettagok a törvényhozás alsó- vagy felsőházának tagjai legyenek.
Cameron kinevezésének közvetlen előzményeként Sunak menesztette Suella Bravermant a belügyminiszteri tisztségről, és utódjaként James Cleverly eddigi külügyminisztert nevezte ki.
